Mosquito Services
When warm weather arrives you want to be outside enjoying it, but all too often you are admiring the beautiful sunshine from inside because the mosquitoes attack the second you open the door. Take back your yard!
Mosquitoes, ticks and fleas are pests that pose a real health concern. These blood suckers can expose us to insect borne illnesses that threaten you, your family and pets. Diseases like Zika, Lyme, west nile and others are on the rise in recent years.
Let First Defence protect what matters most to you.
There are a number of services to offer for your specific needs:
Defender Barrier Treatments:
A barrier treatment that begins working right away and last for weeks. It also protects against all crawling and flying insects trying to invade the safety of your home.
All Natural Treatments:
Using a food grade natural oil that repels mosquitoes immediately. Applied to vegetation, furniture and around the home or structure it continues to work for up to 4 weeks.
Special Events:
Your party, barbecue, wedding, reunion or any other outdoor event should be remembered for the good times, not the mosquitoes. No bride should have to layer on the insect repellent on her special day, and the aroma of your backyard feast shouldn’t have to compete with citronella candles. First Defence can prevent these party crashers without spoiling the fun.
First Defence will come to your event location in advance to apply a barrier spray and ensure that your guests don’t suffer mosquito bites. Dry within 30 minutes and applied well before food is prepared, special event sprays provide protection throughout the day, from setup to the last dance – that means you worry about your guests, and not the buzzing blood suckers.
Commercial Services:
Mosquito control is good for business too.
We use responsible mosquito pest control solutions that target biting insects to help municipalities and businesses keep visitors to outdoor spaces protected from insect-borne disease.
The last thing you want customers to say about your business – “It’s that place where the mosquitoes were so bad.”
For commercial properties with outdoor spaces, eliminating mosquitoes can boost business, ensuring customers’ comfort. Golf courses, dining patios, outdoor stages, theme parks – when business relies on customers being comfortable outdoors.
For municipalities dedicated to providing an ideal environment for outdoor activity, mosquito control allows continued enjoyment during warm weather months when demand is highest. Parks, sports fields, fairgrounds, tennis courts, campgrounds – where people expect to enjoy their public spaces, First Defence can help.
Eliminating mosquitoes is the best way to avoid becoming infected with West Nile virus. You want to make sure you remove areas where mosquitos lay their eggs.
Barrier protection and weed control are two areas to start eliminating any threats. You need to use mosquito spray to remove any uninvited guests. With our barrier protection and a few other tips and tricks we help homeowners and local business live easier and enjoy their backyards a whole lot more.
Here are a few of commonly asked questions from our customers. If you’re new to using an outdoor pest control service, we’re sure you have a lot of questions to ask. If you’d like to know anything not listed below, give us a call at 519-754-1884.
Rain is not a large concern because of the residual attributes of our products. The products are designed to last, so once dry, only a fraction of the product can be physically removed other than by the natural breakdown of the product. We will not spray in the rain, but we can spray soon thereafter.
Pyrethroids are hazardous to fish. As a result, our technicians are trained to avoid fish ponds when providing you with a barrier spray treatment. Our products do not affect swimming pools; nevertheless, our technicians are also trained to not allow the spray to contact the pool water.
After a barrier spray treatment, you need to ensure that the product has completely dried before going outside. We recommend a minimum of 30 minutes. Once the product has completely dried, you and your family may safely enjoy your deck, pool and yard.
Absolutely. Our barrier sprays are a great solution for many commercial businesses such as restaurants with patios, parks, campgrounds, public pools and playgrounds, sports fields, daycares, outdoor wedding venues, schools and more.
Each property is unique and we customize each barrier spray application to successfully treat your mosquito problem. We price our applications based on the size and density of foliage of your property and the amount of product that we will need to use. You can contact us any time for a free quote.
No. As long as your gate is unlocked and your pets are inside, our technician can treat. Our trained professionals will obtain any information pertinent to your location (i.e. locked gate) when you sign up.
You will receive an email upon completion of your treatment so you will know your yard has been serviced. Information on this report will include your date and time of service as well as any comments and helpful hints the technician may have to help you keep your yard as uninviting as possible for mosquitoes, ticks and other pests.
Absolutely. We utilize a food grade garlic oil which repels mosquitoes; however it does not eliminate them. The all-natural services need to be applied more often to continue to be effective, typically every 21 days. Please know that these solutions will leave a strong garlic scent in your yard for one to two hours after application.
We use two primary products in our mosquito treatment. Our main barrier spray products use synthetic forms of pyrethrins called pyrethroids. Pyrethrins are the natural byproduct of the Chrysanthemum flower. Synthetic pyrethroids have a similar chemical structure as the pyrethrins, and are used in numerous commercial products such as household insecticides, pet shampoos and sprays, and even lice shampoos. The products themselves are water-based, mixed in water and will not harm plants.
We also use a natural garlic spray, similar to the garlic in your kitchen but more strong and potent. We use this product around ponds, vegetable gardens, flowering shrubs and flowers so not to harm aquatic life and pollinators (e.g., bees).
All of our products are registered with the Government of Canada.
Our standard treatment primarily targets mosquitoes, but is also effective at reducing the number of fleas and ticks in the yard. Flies and gnats are also affected, but the residual attribute of the product is not effective at long-term suppression of these insects.
Not generally. Mosquitoes do not usually seek shelter in the grass. Our goal in doing a pre-spray walk of the property is to seek out the “hot spots” where mosquitoes will be hiding. The most common areas to find mosquitoes during the day include: the underside of the leaves of dense/shrubby plants, under decks and in damp shady areas of the property. In fact we do recommend that you keep your grass short during the mosquito season.
In some cases such as special events like weddings and large outdoor parties, we will spray the grass where your guests will be. We may also spray the grass to if you’ve asked us to treat a tick problem.
A typical treatment will average about 20-30 minutes. Larger yards may take longer to treat. Each treatment lasts approximately 21-30 days, at which time our team can be scheduled to treat your yard again.
